False diet myths: potatoes make you fat

Food is one of the common topics that has the most myths around it, however, many of them end up being false. For a long time, it has been affirmed that the potato is fattening and that, for this reason, it had to be eliminated from the diet. The potato is not only fattening, but also has many nutrients that make it a food that can replace many others. In the nutritional branch it is assigned as “vegetable C”, which is very similar to cereals, but without so many calories. This food is capable of replacing all kinds of cereal, causing an improvement in our health.

The potato itself is not fattening, what is fattening is the way of preparation

  • The potato has about 80 calories per 100 grams of food and about 80% water. To give us an idea: the caloric content of 100 grams of boiled potatoes is equal to the caloric content of a yogurt or an apple, that is, minimal. The issue in question changes when the potatoes are fried, the oil and fat it contains are what really makes you fat. The same thing happens with pasta. This food itself is not fattening, but depends on how we prepare it.
  • If we cook it boiled it can help us lose weight considerably, it does not consist of lowering the consumption of potatoes, but the consumption of fried foods, including French fries. On the other hand, it is a food that satisfies a lot, so we will not need to eat large quantities to feel full. This works in our favor, since the best diet is to eat without excesses, of any kind. It is no longer so much what we eat, but how we eat it. If, despite eating a healthy diet without abundant amounts, we are not able to lose weight, then we have to visit a nutrition specialist who will tell us which are the best foods for our body.
